Choropleth Chart Shape Schemes

MongoDB Charts provides shape schemes to help define regions in your Choropleth Charts. Each shape scheme has a distinct set of expected values where each value corresponds to a region.

Shape Schemes and Location

In choropleth charts, you specify regions with the Location channel. The value in the location channel must match a region value for the selected Shape Scheme (case insensitive). For example, when using the US States scheme, the region of California will match both california and CA as well as California.

Available Shape Schemes

The following table defines the available shape schemes and their expected Location values:

Shape Scheme Description
Countries and Regions

Default shape scheme. Accepts full country names (e.g., Brazil) and 2-letter ISO country codes (e.g., BR).

Also accepts some common country name variants (e.g., United States and USA).

US States Accepts full United States state names and 2 letter US state abbreviations. For example, New York or NY.
Canadian Provinces Accepts full Canadian province names (English or French) and 2 letter Canadian province codes. For example, New Brunswick or Nouveau-Brunswick.
UK Countries

Accepts the following UK Countries:

  • England
  • Scotland
  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland
UK Counties and Districts

Accepts local administrative counties across the United Kingdom. For example, Norfolk or Essex.

Note

This shape scheme does not include ceremonial counties.

German States Accepts full German state names (English or German) and 2 letter German state codes. For example, Saxony or Sachsen.
Australian States Accepts full Australian state names and 2-3 letter Australian state abbreviations. For example, Victoria or VIC.
Australian Local Government Areas Accepts Australian local government areas. For example, Yarra or Waverley.
